Postage and Packing

(Versandbedingungen)

English textPlease make sure to read your country´s import regulations before placing your order! We do NOT ship live animals: be it puppies, kittens or breeder birds! We don´t ship dressed birds and eggs for eating, neither! Driving directions to our farm can be found here: map & route. The following info is on shipping fertile hatching eggs (also valid for featherwork) only: We send our valuable hatching eggs with the utmost care! We exclusively use wooden carrier boxes for transport! In spite of our great care please note that the risc in shipping hatching eggs is very high! Due to the automated postal distribution system the parcels are dropped and moved around with little care, so the risc of the filigree membranes to get hurt is rather high. We do not send hatching eggs to Austria for this reason but Austrian customers can pick them up directly at our farm instead - because the safest place for hauling hatching eggs is the legroom of your car!

Temperature (Temperatur)

English textAccording to the University of California, Division of Agriculture and Natural Recources hatching eggs should be held at 12° to 20°C (55° to 68°F) and 75% relative humidity. According to the University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension Service "Maintaining a constant environment for hatching eggs prior to incubation is critical to achieve optimum hatchability." and "...hatchability is routinely lost in commercial hatcheries due to neglect of the on-farm egg storage facilities" which I´d like to amend with "...due to the egg transportation conditions/temperatures". Hence we only ship your hatching eggs when temperatures are no colder than 12°C and no hotter than 20°C to ensure minimum decrease of hatchability caused by temperature variation. Nevertheless if you insist/agree we will send your hatching eggs down to 8°C and up to 24°C ambient temperature because some breeders successfully hatched chicks from hatching eggs that were sent within this temperature range. We store our eggs for hatching up to 7 days in an old (nonfunctioning but still good for thermal insulation) fridge to achieve a rather constant storage temperature from 9°C (48°F) to 14°C (57°F) at a relative humidity in the range of 81% to 95% as of April 2010. Below you can see the current (approximate) weather conditions for our hometown.

Packing (Verpackung)

English textWe send your hatching eggs exclusively in wooden carrier boxes (like those winery boxes) holding 5 bubble-wrapped hatching eggs. This enables us to keep shipping weight low, also. Packing material is 5 EUR for the box and 5 EUR for the bubble-wrap plus adhesive tape (=10 EUR for 5 eggs). The following pictures show egg packing material, how we pack the wrapped hatching eggs into the wooden box and how we fortify the wooden box around the edges with adhesive tape:

egg packing step 3   egg packing complete

English textNow here you can see a clip where I drop the parcel several times, drop-height is 1 meter from the feeder pole and around 2 meters when I throw the parcel into the air. You can see the unwrapping of the eggs, also. The video comes in 2 formats, one for slow/low-speed internet (like dial-up) and one for high-speed internet (like cable). All eggs kept visually intact during this test!

Here are the links to our 2 videos:
LQ (dial-up, 1.2 MB, 160x120): eggdrop!
HQ (cable, 22.9 MB, 320x240): eggdrop!

Postage (Postgebühren)

English textWe send your hatching eggs by International Letter Mail (Brief International), PRIORITY, via Austrian Post because this is the fastest way (we are not a business client and hence unable to use EMS). Rates are 10.75 EUR for Europe and 17.85 EUR for World (source: Post.at) as of April 2010.

English textSo for example P&P for a set of 10 fertile, bubble-wrapped hatching eggs sent in 2 wooden carrier boxes to America costs 35.70 EUR postage plus 20 EUR packing = 55.70 EUR (not including the price for the hatching eggs which can be found here). Another example: P&P for a set of 10 eggs sent to London is 41.50 EUR (equals 36.50 GBP as of August 2009).

English textWe ship our featherwork the same way like we ship our hatching eggs: we use a wooden carrier boxes and bubble-foil for maximum protection. We send your featherwork by International Letter Mail (Brief International), ECONOMY, via Austrian Post because this is very economic for parcels up to 1 kg. Rates are 7.35 EUR for Europe and 11.00 EUR for World (source: Post.at) as of April 2010.

Exemplification (Beispiel)

English textUsing the example of an egg-transport within the USA you can clearly see what I mean when I say the risc is "very high", please note the short distance from South Carolina to Oklahoma!

Now here´s the quote from a public poultry forum, posted by a long-time member as a reply to a request by another member for Brahma hatching eggs:

I know of someone who does have them. He sells on ebay sometimes, but when I attempted hatching the eggs, they arrived later than expected and nothing developed.
His name is Gary. He calls the Brahmas 'Droids. Here is a photo of some of the younger stock that he has: http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x22/geareduplyn/009-1.jpg
His email is: geareduplyn"at"msn"dot"com He is located in South Carolina.

And here is a quote to demonstrate the distance between Oklahoma and South Carolina:
[quote start] The total distance from Oklahoma to South Carolina is 1,479 kilometers.
This is equivalent to 919 miles or 798 nautical miles.
Your trip begins in the state of Oklahoma. It ends in the state of South Carolina.

English text We had similar results by recieving hatching eggs from Germany which is about the same distance, BTW: one time we only hatched 2 (two) chicks from 48 eggs. But of course this does not mean it´s impossible! We also hatched 7 chicks from 10 eggs another time, so I think it´s mostly a matter of luck, and as the old saying goes: "Hope springs eternal!"
