2004

Our first 2 chicks hatched out of only 3 eggs. The guessing is easy on these matings: Berta was our clucky hen and Frida was not laying. This leaves only Wilma and Emma as potential dams since we only had 5 birds at the time the sirings did take place and we took the first 3 laid eggs after Berta was already sitting;-) Fridolin was our only rooster this time. The hardest guess is the E-locus, I presume its homozygote e^Wh because both of our pure (Blue) Buff Columbian chicks had very yellowish/whitish/light chick-down color, because the pure males have little to no saddle-striping with whitish/light underfluff, and also the birds come from breeders who had only Buff Columbians for several generations - and therefore prefers true-breeding chickens over heterozygous birds.

In the following 4 matings the dam is uncertain. We call the 4 Columbian hens who hatched hobgoblins;-) We didn't pedigree back when we gave those eggs to our clucky Walli, several hens were laying, Fridolin was the only rooster. My wife collected only Partridge eggs for hatching, that leaves us with Dana and Zwergerl as possible dams. Our Partridge hens both have the same sire, because the breeder we purchased them from had only 1 rooster and a few hens in Partridge color. Zwergerl additionally carries some short-leg genes, her legs are visibly shorter than common. Surprisingly to me 2 out of the 4 offspring-hens show hinted patterns of lacing and 1 pullet shows peppering, while 1 bird almost looks like a pure Blue Buff Columbian pullet.

The 3 cockerels are a bit more complicated to guess. When we first saw the reddish Thor we thought of Paule as the sire. At this time we thought of "Buff" as the color "yellow", so we concluded the "red" must come from the wing-bays of Paule. LOL Infact the sire is more likely to be Fridolin, because of the Columbian pattern on Thor. Hugo and Clyde did not mate the time the sirings did take place. We are sure of the dams in these matings though, we only collected Blue hatching-eggs for Thor and Dark ones for Odin and Loki.

Our breeding group was Thor with the following hens: Alma, Belinda, Lucky, Hanni, Irmi and Hilde. Alma and Belinda did not lay, Hilde´s 2 chicks were killed half developed by Anja the jealous hen. We learned the hard way that not all hens are calm and loving towards a clucky hen, Lisa did try to protect her clutch but nevertheless we lost the 2 chicks who were black as the night due to ramblings in the nesting box;-( We think those 2 fully black chicks were Birchens from the Black hen Hilde, in 2007 we hatched another Birchen alike male chick from her.

As for Berta's chicks we were completely unprepared due to stress: Berta's clutch consisted of randomly collected eggs from the main group, she did this job herself. In this main group Odin was the leading cockerel because Loki and Hugo were subordinate and Fridolin takes care of our "kindergarten" group. About half of the 20 hens were laying so we have a quiz game here: The hobgoblins are strong layers and also the "Partridge Connection" from the Hentschls lay very well. Anja has poor vigor and doesn't lay, Zwergerl is small and fat this year and therefore doesn't lay either. The second Black hen shows signs of poor vigor and I haven't seen her laying a single egg this year. From the Darks Burgi looks like the most vital hen and therefore I guess she was the one laying. Lets see if we can figure out who might be dam as time proceeds and the chicks fully fletch;-)

The first of Thor´s ladies is Adelheid, a Partridge pullet, one beautiful and heavy girl from the "Partridge Connection". Her hatching eggs are rather light-weighted because she´s still young: 1.83; 1.87; 1.90; 1.94 and 2.05 oz. Next in row is Hilde, a Black hen, she's 2 years old and her eggs put 2.22; 2.26; 2.29; 2.33; and 2.40 oz to the scale.

Next comes Lisa, she is beautifully shaped and one heavy lady, here are her egg-weights: 2.01; 2.08; 2.15; 2.26; and 2.33 oz. And finally the magnificent Frida who just began to lay again after molting with super sized eggs putting: 2.26; 2.29; 2.33; 2.36; 2.47 and 2.50 oz to the scale. That's a fantastic 0.49 oz above-standard;-)

Since we are breeding for size also we try to give only eggs over 2.12 oz whenever possible. Remember, minimum hatching egg weight for Brahma according to the German Standard is only 1.87 oz.
